A consumer's guide to solar home design, by the pre-eminent authority on renewable energy systems.

solar thermal - not just for individual homes

SDA engineers solar thermal for a multi-unit housing complex

Boston high-rise has first grid-connected PV system in the U.S.
Location: Boston, MA USA

Use: Solar hot-water system for a multi-unit housing complex

Background:
Planners wanted to incorporate solar energy into this 286-unit, moderate-income housing complex near Boston. SDA recommended solar domestic water heating as the most cost-effective approach.

Special Features:
SDA contributed to the project by:

  • providing design and engineering services
  • assisting with code compliance and procurement
  • providing a pre-bid vendor conference
  • conducting an initial training session for the installation contractor
  • on-site technical support during construction
  • completing all system commissioning activities

Outcome:
When completed, this 7,500 ft2 SDHW system was the largest in New England. It supplies approximately 80% of the annual domestic hot water requirements of the complex.

This project also features the first grid-connected solar electric system in the US. The system is visible on the center wing of the complex.

Starting early in the design phase, SDA worked with the architects to incorporate a single-loaded corridor on the top floor, creating a recess in the south side of the building to help receive the large array of solar thermal collectors.

SDA has been collaborating with architects for over thirty years, forging new paths to energy efficiency and innovation.
