SDA delivers a turn-key BIPV project with dramatic results

The Giant Solar Cube makes a bold statement in Santa Ana. |
Location: Santa Ana, CA USA
Client: Discovery Science Center
Use: Non-profit children's science center
|
Background:
In keeping with their mission to make science an exciting, hands-on experience for the general public, the Discovery Center approached Solar Design to make the Cube itself an applied science exhibit, as well as their icon, by cladding the south face with a giant photovoltaic array.

Construction of the Discovery Cube.Special Features:
- SDA designed an integrated array of thin-film, amorphous silicon modules that cover the cube's entire south face which is tilted at 50º for maximum visual impact.
- The solar modules serve as an architectural glazing element, replacing a 'conventional' glass skin.
- The project is the first commercial application of Building-integrated Photovoltaics installed by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).
SDA retained United Power, LTD of Vancouver, BC to manage construction. United’s President, George Ingham, worked closely with IBEW Local #441 to select a motivated crew and get the job done.
Outcome:
The 12-story high, custom-designed, black-anodized, geodesic space-frame standing over 150-feet tall on one corner, captures public interest with a highly-visible public display of the science center's interest in renewable energy.
When completed, the Discovery Center Solar Cube was the largest building-integrated array of thin-film PV in the country.
The Discovery Science Center Solar Cube
is a good example of SDA's custom architectural integration. The firm was responsible for the entire project on a turn-key basis:
- design
- engineering
- approvals
- procurement
- construction
- engineering
- commissioning
The solar energy system is connected to the Discovery Center's main utility service. The solar electricity is fed into the Science Center's electrical distribution system, displacing conventional utility power. When the solar system produces more electricity than the Science Center needs, the excess electricity can be "exported" to the utility.

SDA's engineering expertise helped create an icon for the Discovery Science Center. Solar Design Associates is noted for seeking new solutions in building design,
pushing the envelope and taking bold steps into the future with visionary clients.
