academic research and learning facility powered by solar energy
SDA engineers innovative PV sunshades for Environmental and Atmospheric Science Center
|
Location: Albany, NY USA
Client: State University of New York
Use: Academic research and educational facility
|
Background:
The Center for Environmental Sciences and Technology Management at the State University of New York in Albany combines research laboratories, a business "incubator" for technology transfer, and the National Weather Service forecasting office for the Albany region. The SUNY community sought to create a multi-functional facility that would showcase environmentally-responsive technologies as well as contribute a practical, efficient source of energy.

SDA pioneered the use of facade-integrated PV sunshades for this building.Special Features:
- SDA engineered the first U.S. use of facade-integrated photovoltaic sunshades for the building
- The sunshades support the generation of solar electricity while reducing unwanted cooling loads and glare
- An array of large area PV modules forms a glazed canopy in a landscaped park area to the south of the building
- Both systems are utility interactive and all PV modules feature integral micro inverters.
Outcome:
SDA provided engineering, design and integration services to support the architects and landscape architects in developing an energy-conscious design strategy for the complex, which included the integration of solar electric systems into the building and the project site.
SDA has completed dozens of solar and wind energy projects with schools and colleges. We are pleased to consider any academic building project that features the use of renewable-energy applications.
