Location: Martha's Vineyard, MA USA Use: Vacation home off the grid

Background:
Located on a secluded beachfront site on an island off the coast of Massachusetts, this historic structure was painstakingly relocated to its current site, retaining all of its original materials and charm, but placing it 2.5 miles from the closest utility power line.

On site electricity generation and storage were required, and Solar Design Associates was called in to find a solution.

Building modification was not an option, so we opted for a solution that includes:

• a ground-based stand-alone PV array
• a cluster of micro-turbine windmills generating 1kW of energy production

• The house is fitted with high-efficiency appliances
• A large battery pack for elecrical storage enables complete independence from the utility grid
