Steven J. Strong - President

Steven Strong is acknowledged as a pre-eminent authority on integration of renewable energy systems in buildings.

Drawing on his background in architecture and engineering, he has pioneered the concept of integrated design with applications such as solar electricity (photovoltaics), solar thermal and wind energy.

Steven has designed dozens of homes and buildings powered by solar electricity - from the Outermost House to the White House. His work is notable for a long series of firsts:

• World's first fully solar private residence:
  In 1979, SDA designed the first private residence in the world to be fully powered by a utility-interactive solar electric system - no fossil fuel.

• World's first solar-powered neighborhood:
  In 1984, working with New England Electric, Solar Design powered up an entire neighborhood, including residential and commercial PV-powered buildings, in central Massachusetts.

• First solar-powered Olympics:
  In 1996, Steven worked with Olympic village architects to power the Summer Games in Atlanta with solar electricity using the world's largest roof-top PV system.

• First solar-powered U.S. embassy:
  Steven worked with Department of State architects to power the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in Geneva with solar electricity.

• First fully solar-powered academic facility:
  At Oberlin College, Steven worked with Environmental Studies Chair David Orr to power the Lewis Environmental Studies Center completely with solar energy.

• First wind-powered college campus:
  At the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Steven fielded a utility-scale wind turbine to power this campus at the western mouth of the Cape Cod Canal.

• First Major League Sports stadium to go solar:
  Steven and SDA provided solar design, engineering and construction management for the greening of the San Francisco Giants' AT&T Park.

• Boston's first commercial scale wind turbine:
  SDA partnered with Local 103 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers to install this visible symbol of wind power.

• In 1999, TIME magazine named Steven an Environmental "Hero for the Planet."
• In 2001, the American Solar Energy Society presented him with its Charles Greeley Abbot Award - the Society's highest honor, for outstanding achievement in the advancement of solar energy.
